From Littleneck to Santiago and Back - It's Been a Scribbly Week!
This week in a nutty shell (Includes Days 47-53 of our Drawing Exchange)
Thriller Update
When
and I compared notes, we realized we were working from slightly different mental maps of a couple of key locations in our psychological thriller. Here’s the current vision of where the main points of interest are located on our fictitious island:
We also had some challenges when it came to the layout of Rose’s house on the island. If the front of the house has ocean views but the main entrance (traditionally known as the front door) is at the back of the house by the driveway and the whole house is wrapped in decks - front, back, and sides - where is the orchard? The infamous shed? How old is the captain? We’re also navigating the challenges of some of the action taking place in Seattle, not so far from the made up island, but very much a real place. Adding imaginary spaces (a night club, a recording studio) within the limits of a well-known city is tricky given you need to know when they head away from the ferry terminal they are heading uphill or how long it would take to walk to an older house in a particular neighbourhood… All those details, though incidental to the meat of the story, are important to get right/internally consistent so readers don’t roll their eyes, snap the book shut and say, Seriously?
What I’m Reading (for school)
Why Religion? A Personal Story by Elaine Pagels (author of The Gnostic Gospels)
The Wave in the Mind: Talks and Essays on the Writer, the Reader, and the Imagination by Ursula K. Le Guin
Tales of Nevèrÿon by Samuel R. Delaney
What I’m Watching
Slowly. There isn’t much time for watching… Portrait Artist of the Year (recommended by
). Inspiring, though. Makes me want to spend more time learning/drawing - more, anyway, than the few minutes I eke out each day to hold up my end of the Daily Drawing Challenge bargain (see below). What I’m Struggling With
The very complicated project on which Dani (daughter who dragged me back to school) and I are working on together. The writing is challenging - three short essays inspired by visual references from our 2017 Camino and three pieces of visual art - each. All of these are to be braided into a cohesive whole. Hah! Let’s just say things will get more tangled before we comb free the essential strands and weave them back together. Oh what were we thinking???
And, balance. The day job in real estate is hopping at the moment, which means I have precious little time to bake bread, go climbing, or tidy my desk.
Daily Drawing Challenge
With Sarah sick and me juggling crayons faster than I could say scribblescribblescribble! we had a wild and crazy week with our daily drawing exchange. BUT - we managed to go another week without missing a day! So, yay for us! BTW - if you want to keep up with the drawings and our daily writing back and forth in more or less real time, we are posting to the website daily but thought better of swamping your email inboxes with daily emails.

That’s it for this week! Don’t forget to find moments of joy where and when you can :)
