Hi Nikki,
February 19, 2025
My mom was born on February 19, 1913. I posted my primulas from yesterday on IG today, with a lovely picture of her taken at one of my favourite places, Kye Bay, near Courtenay. I miss her every day, but I know she'd be really pleased that we have stuck with our daily drawing.
While I was looking for the photograph of my mother, I came across a scan of a drawing my oldest brother did of me when I was about 16 (he would have been 20). He definitely captured something about me. He was always drawing--mostly cartoons like this one--but he stopped when he went away to university, I think.
When I was drawing the primulas yesterday, I realized I had no idea how to draw the curving, bumpy leaves. Enter a YouTube tutorial. Results are attached. It's funny how ridiculously pleased I feel when I learn something like this!
I also read all of The Thriller this morning and liked it a lot! Sure it needs developing and tweaking (and editing) but, as they say in your business, it has good bones.
Looking forward to our writing session tomorrow.
XO Sarah
Hi Sarah!
OMG I love the drawing of Sarah at 16! Before I read the explanation, I thought it was a self-portrait (you should give that a go next :)
I agree re. the satisfaction quotient of learning how to do something like draw twisty leaves!
After reading the rest of The Thriller So Far, I agree that we seem to be writing an actual book. It’s very cool to see it slowly starting to come together. There are bits I’d forgotten we had written that made me laugh - and, parts that made me cringe and say ‘don’t do it!!’ (knowing the characters will regret their bad decisions later…)
Because I had to go to the city and back today, very little time to draw so I decided to see how quickly I could scribble some wiggly people.

In pen, obviously, so there was no going back once I let the ink go where it wanted to go. Not sure I like any of them, but if I did squiggly people every day, they would perhaps start to cooperate more than these dudes did today.
Also looking forward to our session tomorrow. Crazy how a few pages each week start to stack up, hey? I mean, I know this to be true, but it’s always a bit of a surprise to know that the midway point in the first draft has now shifted into the rear view mirror.
Onward!
