I can't believe you never told your parents. Not even when you were an adult? Wow. Great pictutres.

I can remember telling mine stuff when I was way too old to get into trouble. Can not imagine running into a bear and keeping quiet. Being the story teller I was, I would probably have embellished 😂

I love this piece. The sketches or drawings are absolutely fabulous! What a story to tell. Cannot believe you kept this to yourself.

Thank you! So happy you enjoyed this… As for telling, though - no way. When it came to standing up to my mother, I was a total wimp. I would rather have taken my chances with the local wildlife :) I don’t think my parents fully appreciated just how far afield I used to roam on my own… and those adventures were some of the absolute best times of my childhood. I would have done pretty much anything to preserve my freedom to explore.

I cannot imagine you in wimp status after that adventure with you and the horse and the bear. I just can’t. But yes, mothers have that way of baring our thoughts and making life harder than it needs to be I guess. I loved reading it and at the same time felt the anxiety and worry. Exciting memories to have in your luggage.

I skied at Steamboat last winter, and came around a corner to see a yearling moose lying by the right side of the trail eating snow. On the left side, twenty yards along, was its momma, munching pine boughs. What to do???? I found a moose-avoidance trail through the woods. No humans were harmed in the writing of this Substack note.

Ah yes - the delights of leaving the comforts of home :) Would love to see you draw this incident...

Thx for that thought. I returned home from the ski trip (last February) full of beans to draw it all for comic effect. But now it's June. NOT ski season. Next year! Moose are patently hilarious creatures, unless they happen to be chasing you through the underbrush with evil intent.

Okay that's definitely a cool life you lead!! I'm in bed with my phone thinking about getting up and accomplishing stuff . ...trying to decide whether to take public transportation or a cab from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv, to an Artists Book Fair, tonight, and you got bears in the woods !!! I'm impressed!!!

Thanks for reading! To be clear, I don't see bears every day... elk, yes - pretty common - the occasional coyote - but three bears in a day? That's pretty good. I am VERY interested to hear more about the Artists Book Fair - we don't have those in my neck of the woods :)

Are you talking artists' books? Or books about art: If the former, here's one. https://www.roundhouse.ca/event/vancouver-art-book-fair/

And I found this old but interesting article by Stephen Ross Smith, formerly (?) of Banff. (I think he's moved.) https://www.gallerieswest.ca/news/artists-books-word-and-image-blend-in-this-irresistible-craf/

I stand corrected!! I had no idea Banff had a collection of 4000 artist books! We should go on a field trip!!
