You're not lost, you're wandering
Dear Sarah/Dear Nikki - Day 442 of our daily drawing exchange
Hi Sarah -
last night, I dreamed in collage. It was so strange - I kept peeling up edges of the dream images to see what was behind them. Maps. Clouds. Darkness.
The whole experience was more surreal than even my weird dreams tend to be.
Today, while working on the never-ending task of clearing out my office, I found this teeny, tiny palette of watercolour paints (I think a present from Dani? Quite likely because the name of the palette is the same as my real estate company name).
I started smooshing the blue-grey around with a water brush, then took a photo, enlarged it, and printed it onto photo paper. From there, started cutting and pasting.
Found a photo from a trip to Europe in which I am standing on a street in Portugal (I think) under a sign I loved - “You’re not lost. You’re here.” These are certainly words I live by, given how often I am lost and completely unconcerned about my perpetual state of disorientation.
For some time now, I’ve been collecting maps, hoping to find a use for them, and last night’s dream was the nudge I needed to start cutting them up and repurposing them elsewhere. If I still had old charts from our sailing days, I agree with your comments from yesterday that they would make excellent collage fodder.
Cheers,
Nikki
Hi Nikki,
Apparently I don’t pay any attention to my own “notes to self,” since I ended up making art after dinner again. I was out from 9 to 4:30—dentist appointment followed by some time with grandkids. We went to the Beacon Hill Park petting zoo to see the baby goats, which were adorable, of course. Followed that with lunch at the Beacon Hill Drive In, which was another kind of zoo! While we were waiting in line for our ice cream, a school bus pulled up and disgorged about 50 Japanese teenagers, who lined up down the sidewalk. Glad we had come earlier, when the line-ups were tolerable. I haven’t had a chocolate dip cone from there for a very long time. So delicious.
I got some new toys today—rubber stamps (from England via Amazon) and a stamp pad. Fooled around with the map/chart motif, just having fun. Love your latest collage, especially the sign. Reminds me a bit of “Not all those who wander are lost.”
XO S
