Three sisters, dots, dashes, lines and plants
Dear Sarah - Day 147 of our daily drawing exchange
May 27, 2025
Hi Nikki,
A few days ago, I signed up for a 21-day drawing challenge with an artist I follow on IG. What can I say? It only cost 20 bucks. I did days 1 and 2 today, and was a bit surprised to find that day 1 involved simply drawing a repeated pattern of straight lines, and day 2 was wavy lines. I did the exercises and actually found them really helpful for learning to control my pen. Turns out lines aren't all that simple.

I moved on to inking in my pencil sketch of the pots on my deck, and was pleased to find that the exercises I had just done were applicable to what I was drawing--porch railings, bamboo sticks, plant stems, flowers, leaves. Sadly, the tall plant (second from the left, a perennial verbena) was either sat on or dive-bombed by a seagull or crow, or knocked over by the wind yesterday. None of the other plants were affected, so I think it was a bird. It made me quite sad, but it will grow back, and I will propagate new plants from the broken branches. I think tomorrow I will add colour to the drawing. Excited to use my new watercolours--especially Sap Green!
Until tomorrow.
XO S
Hello Sarah!
Well, today was another non-stop, very full day. After wrapping up the last of some pressing paperwork, I was just grateful I am back home in the mountains…
In one of the houses I showed today in Cochrane there were several pieces of art on the walls depicting the Three Sisters. I never tire of seeing the girls out there… I can see why so many artists are drawn to them as subjects.
And now - bed!
