Surfacing and dripping
Dear Nikki/Dear Sarah--Y2/D19 of our daily drawing exchange
Hi Nikki,
I changed it up a bit today and drew in between a client call and a walk. The prompt was to piece together three different drawing surfaces: in this case, drawing paper, pages torn from a book I use to make paper ornaments once upon a time (yes, it’s Chicken Soup for the Christmas Soul—found in a Little Free Library) and a brown paper grocery bag. The remit was to find an object with complex shapes and textures. I drew my mom’s old Foley food mill, which is in the picture in case readers wonder what the hell I was trying to draw. I used black and white charcoal and turned the object each time. My fave is the one on the paper bag.
The sun is shining again today, so a walk to the library is in order to pick up the The Story of Art Without Men. Doing afterschool pickup later—I’m going to take them on a walk up to the the observatory on Gonzales Hill. Went there yesterday with Jen. It was glorious. We pretended we were in Greece. Pics below.
XO S
Hi Sarah -
I love the photo of the food mill and the three renditions. I also like the one on the paper bag best. Also very cool is how you teleported yourself to Greece.
Today, I’m experimenting with trying to describe the slow passage of time as captured by the splish of a water droplet. Taken directly from a scene in The Stronghold, it may (or may not) become part of a close reading assignment we have to do. I still have another week or two to make up my mind as to exactly what I’m going to do - and, I am awaiting approval for my somewhat unorthodox approach from my prof. But, assuming she is willing to allow me to continue my text/image experiments in response to the readings and films, I’ll keep going by drawing moments/themes/ideas as they strike me from week to week.
Until tomorrow -
Nikki
