Today we did something a little different at the end of our writing session. We simultaneously did blind contour drawings of each other. The photos above are what we looked like to each other… Here are the results:

Dear Nikki,
It was great to see you today, to make a wee bit of progress on the book, but most of all to do two blind contour drawings of you. I may be kidding myself, but I think Portrait #2 captures something of you. The ear piece and cord are strong!

I've been thinking about how much I disliked my watercolour rhodo and why. I realized that because I have no idea how to use the medium, I have just been trying to draw with it, which doesn't work AT ALL. It has its own properties (the wetness, for one) that are entirely unlike what a pen or pencil or stick of charcoal can do. All of this seems pretty obvious, now that I think about it, but the penny drops when it drops, right? My goal when we started this project was to learn how to draw the world around me, but as that world blooms, the pull towards colour is very powerful. So I'm going to try to separate the drawing from the colour for now.
