Dear Nikki,
March 1, 2025
I thought I would try and put the perspective drawing theory into practice and found it very difficult and frustrating. I was working from a photograph (attached) of an old brick building on Work Point (Navy Base). I started with a fine pencil and a ruler and it felt too clinical, so I switched to a slightly softer pencil. So much erasing! But even though it's by no means accurate, there was a LOT to work with (roofs, chimney pots, windows, eaves, downspouts etc.) and I got some of it right! I didn't even attempt the brickwork!!

It may be an ongoing project--I think the building itself has so much character. I realized halfway through that I should have worked from the top down (or maybe the bottom up) but going top to bottom was problematic.
Then I dashed off a quick pen drawing of me tearing my hair out (and about to go under water)! That was fun, especially since I have a new pen: Sakura Micron 03. Sooooo smooth. Way more so than a fine Sharpie or my other Faber Castell pens. It just flowed across the page. You should get a couple, if you haven't already.
DId a bit of writing today, trying to figure out how to tell Rose's story without it being an info dump. Interesting challenge. I think it may be an imaginary conversation between her and Cass.
XO S
Hi Sarah!
Oh wow, I can sure identify with your hair-pulling!! I know the feeling all too well! I LOVE the choice of subject (way to pick something tricky!!!!!) - and, really like the way it’s turning out! One of my dreams is to be able to sit at a café (in Paris, of course) and be able to draw a street scene that looks vaguely like what I’m looking at.
Today, though, I suddenly realized that I had almost missed the deadline for a submission to a zine collection being coordinated by
.This is what I came up with in the end - I used a page I had done before, scanned and resized it to A-4, then added text and an overlay fusion light sketch of my features onto what had been a bit of a shapeless blob-face. I will keep you posted on the progress of that project - I believe there will be a limited run of the zine that will feature work from zinesters from all over the place.
I had planned to also do a fresh drawing, but totally ran out of time because of a rush of work obligations I could not put aside. Real estate comes with a whole slew of rather vexing (and non-negotiable) deadlines.
Now, to bed as tomorrow I have an early start and the fast juggling will continue!
G’night!
N
