Hi Nikki
February 11, 2025
I didn't have a lot of time to draw today, and after yesterday's intense, lengthy sketchfest, with its focus on detail, I wanted to try something looser and faster. I decided to do some quick one-line ink drawings, which are all done from memory. (I clearly have no idea what a horse looks like; maybe you should do the same exercise, since you actually know a lot about horses, including where their legs go!) After I finished all the line drawing, I did go back and add some details (and turned my second set of horse legs into a grand colonnade). Maybe tomorrow I'll try squiggle drawings (both ideas are from Drawing Lab by Carla Sonheim).
I loved your shadow drawing. You really captured the elusiveness of the shadow. I noticed the paper seemed to be folded--was that intentional or was a piece of folded paper your only option. Yesterday we learned a bit about using grids and a lot of the artists on Portrait Artist of the Year use them.
Off to the optometrist soon to have a dry eye treatment. Not much fun but really helps my vision and eye comfort.
Speaking of vision: get some new glasses!!!

Oh, these one-liners are fun!! I think I’ll try some as well - though, probably not horses. Even if one knows what they look like, they are stupidly hard to draw! I think my favourite of yours is Carmen Miranda.
Since you asked, the line down the middle of the shadow drawing of yesterday was meant to be the corner of the wall on which the shadow fell.
As for glasses… if enough lovely people were to upgrade to paid subscriptions, I’d invest in another pair… (hint! hint! dear readers…). I’m only half kidding. The wonky ones I’m wearing are relatively new and my prescription is strong = pricey. I resent paying for something twice so, instead, I wedge them onto my head using my audio headset or my sailing croakies. Croakers. What are those silly straps called that people use to affix eyeglasses to face?
Ok… here you go, a one-line (more or less) tree with horse, clouds, and moon…
I did that during an online ZOOM meeting - the contemporary equivalent of doodling on a legal pad.
Though - I like this idea - I’m going to play with single line drawings again tomorrow…
