On the ferry and drawing boxes
Dear Sarah--Day 338 of our daily drawing exchange
Hi Nikki,
Lovely day today—drove out to Brentwood Bay and took the ferry across as a foot passenger to Mill Bay, where I had lunch with my friend, Maggie. I haven’t been on that ferry for years—but it hasn’t changed. Friendly staff, calm water and a wonderful conversation with a retired merchant marine captain, who asked, after he saw me sketching, whether I was a professional artist. I laughed and we got talking about being on the water (he has a boat, I used to live on one) and the fact that he lives in one of my all-time favourite places, Coles Bay. You can see his house from the ferry. I did one drawing going out and one coming back. The passenger “lounge” is very small, so I had to draw one person whose back was to me and another who seemed near sleep.
And now, to work.
XO S
Hi Sarah -
Kind of a weird day here with a lot of computer work, a late lunch/early dinner followed by a gathering (larger than expected) to celebrate a friend’s 80th. That went longer than expected and so I didn’t have a lot of time to spend on Amy Stewart’s latest drawing lesson. I had been sort of following her and for whatever reason she caught my eye today when I was scrolling through my Substack inbox. There’s so much good stuff in there (in the inbox in general) and it annoys me that I never get to see even a fraction of it. Anyway… Amy’s lesson in perspective as applied to gift boxes was very good, though I clearly didn’t get it quite right when I started added in some extra boxes beyond those she kindly provided for us as starters…
I also didn’t have time to add any color, but it did feel good to be drawing. I’ll have another crack at this knowing that I will need to take more time… She refers to a couple of earlier lessons on perspective, which I’ll also explore.
The next few days look as though they will be similarly full of things that must be done before we pack the car and drive west for a week of festive family fun.
Talk soon!
Nikki
PS - I’m very impressed that you are drawing people when you are out and about - your micro vacation sounds quite marvelous…

Hey, thanks for the shout-out! This is so cool!
