Dear Sarah - January 26, 2025
The other day I experimented with circles. Today, squares.
Observations:
The eye is accurate and critical. I was always keenly aware of how unsquare my squares were.
It's incredibly relaxing to draw the same shape over and over again.
Those brush pens are really difficult to control, but I feel as though practice is perhaps helping my hand-eye coordination. But, again, when I look at the colours, I see all kinds of problems - uneven textures, flopping outside the lines, unsquare-squares made more obviously unsquare... Then again, their very unsquareness makes them more alive somehow (if squares can be lively). I would not want to attempt this with a ruler. Though, having said that, I should attempt this again with a ruler or using masking tape, or something...
Fortunately, we are only approaching the end of January, so I have plenty of time left to continue my experiments.
And - it's nearly the end of January and we have managed to keep our daily drawings going!!!! This in itself feels like an accomplishment!

Step away from the ruler! The wobbly lines add life and bounce.
I was tempted to try playing with diamonds, but then I remembered the woodsman of the woods, a carving attached to a tree in Saxe Point Park. He moves around the park, and I hadn't seen him for a while, but a few days ago there he was--looking a bit like an pissed off Norse god.
I drew him with a pen only, trying to use cross-hatching for shadows. My first attempt looks like a Hell's Angel who thinks you stole his bike, so I tried again, paying more attention to the proportions.
Newsflash: wood is hard to draw! Also, I didn't contextualize him, which would have meant drawing a different kind of tree on one side and ivy and blue sky on the other.
I can't believe it's almost February, and we haven't missed a day! Even when you were on the other side of the world. I look forward to drawing every day, but it's the connection with you that keeps me going with this project and the novel.
Art class tomorrow. YAY!
