Hi Nikki,
March 3, 2024
At my art class today, Natalie talked a bit about composition and tone and then set us loose to draw. We could use whatever medium we felt drawn to, and we chose subject matter from Natalie's massive collection of photos pulled from magazines, calendars, brochures etc. She suggested that we choose something we were drawn to, either by subject matter, or colour, or scene. I chose a wooden fish boat tied up near a red house and about a million leafless trees--probably poplars. I chose it because I used to live on a very similar boat, and it gave me all the feels.
It is nowhere near completed (what you see took 1.5 hours), and you will note that the house (which is behind the trees), looks as if it's in a torrential rainfall. I need to rethink drawing all those trees, but I'm not unhappy with the results so far. It needs a lot of work, but I took home the source material and will be refining in the days to come.
My last art class is next week, but I'll probably sign up for Natalie's next class: Intro to Drawing and Painting.
I think it's yoga-time now. It will feel good to stretch.
Hope your day hasn't been too insane (hahahaha--who am I kidding!).
XO S
Dear Sarah -
Keep going! I’m sure there’s a solution for the trees (though I could not tell you what it is… change the weather to a downpour? blur them out and don’t bother tying to draw them all?). The boat is great (I remember well your picture book about all the puppies - Puppies on Board I think it was called? It’s a very west coasty-scene and I can see why you were drawn to it. (Groan. Sorry).
I’m about to head into my night class, but once again, my hand agreed to stay still-ish long enough for a quick sketch. My god what a complicated appendage.
Off I go to bend my brain into some new shapes! (Speaking of classes, it would be so much fun to be doing an in-person drawing class together. Looking forward to seeing what next week brings - and, after that, your next class… Should our thriller make scads of cash we should go do an art retreat somewhere exotic…)
Until tomorrow -
Nikki
