Hookah came to dinner? Three crows in a winter tree...
Dear Sarah - Day 121 of our daily drawing exchange
May 1, 2025
Hi Nikki,
I can't believe it's May already! A few months ago, I took a photo of three crows sitting in the bare branches of the tree outside my window. I messed around with charcoal and pen, trying not to get too fussy. There was so much detail I could have added, but I just wanted branches and crows--no bus stop, street, buildings or cars. I quite like it.
The sun is shining and I haven't walked yet today, so off I go. But first I must scrub the charcoal off my hands!

Hi Sarah!
So… Dani and I went out for dinner tonight thinking we were going to get some tasty Lebanese food, which we did. The meal was delicious. But when we arrived at our table we were both surprised to see that guests at several of the other tables were enjoying leisurely visits around hookahs.
The burbling and bubbling as people took deep pulls on the hookahs was not quite the usual back ground soundscapes of your average restaurant, at least not those we tend to frequent.
After arriving back at the hotel, Dani did some googling and discovered that hookah bars/restaurants are permitted in Calgary despite there being a province-wide ban on smoking in bars and restaurants. We were impressed with the ventilation system in the restaurant where we found ourselves (it must have been excellent) because there was no evidence (other than the gurgles) of the scents I associate with hookahs. I realize that sentence doesn’t exactly make sense as a gurgle is not a scent… but I trust you get my drift.
We had a fabulous meal, enjoyed our unexpected journey to somewhere that didn’t exactly feel like Calgary, and when I was musing what I was going to draw back at the hotel, Dani pointed out the obvious…
I LOVE your crows in bare branches. I would totally have a print of that to hang in my office. Maybe when you come you could bring your sketchbook and we could make a scan and a print for you to leave behind?
See you (on zoom) tomorrow when I’m hoping to finally have a chance to read Stabby-Stabby and then keep going on the missing workshop scenes…
Nikki
