Hi Nikki,
March 10, 2025

Art class was great today. Natalie asked us to bring in something to draw, and then draw it using four different media. Many people were absent from the class (which was good for those of us in attendance), and she noted that many people hate drawing the same thing over and over. I loved it. As you will see, I used pencil first, followed by charcoal, ink and then charcoal again for a different view. For the ink drawing I used something called a Staedtler Marsgraphic 3000 duo watercolour brush pen. Fine tip on one end, brush tip on the other. I have no idea where it came from, and I know it's been kicking around a long time, so I was astonished that it still worked. I adore the fluid quality of the line it made, and will no doubt "need" to buy some more.
The object I brought in to draw was a tarnished silver serving spoon with some ornate flourishes. I balanced it on a piece of wood covered with barnacles, for some contrast and compositional interest. For the last drawing I turned the spoon upside down. If time had allowed I could have drawn more versions. I learned so much about what each medium brought to the drawing. Definitely a process I will undertake again.
Hope you like my title suggested (in a text). I like the way it plays on both writing and finality!
XO S
Hi Sarah -
What a cool set of spoons! I’m not sure which I like best - each has its own character! I love the choice of the barnacle resting device…
Sorry I didn’t respond to your text - YES! I love the name - I think that could work very well… Of course, we may not have the final say in the title, but definitely one to consider seriously, I’d say :)
As for the drawing today - I have not stopped running since just before 7 this morning. Finally home now and out of back-to-back Zoom classes - one a critique group I run and the second our weekly class for the MA program… So, I’m bagged - and back to drawing the handiest subject ever! (Ballpoint pen on a lovely handmade paper).
But, exhausted - so, off I go now to bed…
Until tomorrow -
Nikki
