Flowers in Perspective and Crayons be Damned!
Dear Sarah - Day 52 of our Daily Drawing Exchange
Hi Nikki,
February 21, 2025
Even though my cold is getting worse, I've managed to draw Rose's property, finish off a work project, make myself a pizza for dinner later, and draw flowers from seven different perspectives. Not bad, considering all the sneezing etc.
I've reached the stage in the writing of Bloody Words where I go to sleep thinking about it and wake up thinking about it. This is a good sign, even though many of my thoughts have evaporated by the time I'm fully awake.
And now it's time to lie down again. To sleep, perchance to dream---about A and C in the rock star's cabin, maybe.
XO S
PS Loved you skater girl! So much energy.
Hi Sarah!
February 21, 2025
So, I actually spent quite a bit of time today on the ongoing drawing of the inner courtyard of the Parador in Santiago, but I won’t post that as I’m not sure how far I’m going to go with it and there’s no need to post all the interim stages…
Thank you for doing the drawings of Rose’s property - very helpful! I like the idea of drawing flowers (or anything, really) from severn different perspectives, but right at this moment, that feels overwhelming. I’ve been enjoying doing the lightning-fast scribble people, so today I thought I’d keep experimenting with speed.
The first day I tried scribbly dudes, it was with pen. The following day, pencil. Today, I thought I’d see what would happen with crayons. OMG - what horrible blunt instruments! I’m sure someone has mastered them, but the very cheapo crayons I found in a box in my office were AWFUL!
Trying to salvage something of this poor creature, I went over the pallid crayon scribbles with pencil… Did not help. I pressed so hard, though, the next page had indents, so I went over those on the next page very lightly with pale green crayon (glutton for punishment, I know) but then went in over that faint echo of the original with a random assortment of pens, orange crayon (about the only one with pigment to speak of), and yellow highlighter.
All the while I was chanting under my breath, draw like a child, it doesn’t matter if it sucks, just play, grab the next random implement from your pencil case, keep going, don’t worry…
Where do these images come from? The same place our fictitious characters live, I guess? We start with blank pages and then, when we’re done, they aren’t blank any more… I do feel much more in control of the writing, I must say.
Hope you have a good sleep and that tomorrow you will be feeling better.
G’night!
N
