Desperate times, desperate doodles - and fun and games with watercolour experiments
Dear Sarah - Day 172 of our daily drawing exchange
June 21, 2025
Hi Nikki,
Well, the first day of summer was not very summery. Windy, rainy, cold with a brief sunny intermission in the late afternoon. I went out to Sunwing Greenhouse and got delicious veggies and will have a big salad for dinner.
Today I decided to do an experiment with textures in watercolour, using salt, rice, plastic wrap, a tissue, thread etc. This is something I've seen online and it looked pretty straightforward. The results, as you can see, are quite disappointing. Although I do like the colours I used.
Then I tried to figure out some colour washes for a painting I want to do. I quite like the test page, but the actual painting--yikes. I used too much water in the wash and the paper buckled immediately and the colours got muddy, I'll try again another day. Or maybe not!
XO Sarah
Hi Sarah -
Talk about crummy weather! It SNOWED today (on and off - when it wasn’t snowing it was raining). Down here in the valley the snow didn’t stick around, but the mountains look glorious. I had several appointments today, so I wound up driving and using my heated steering wheel - in JUNE!!
I’m trying to spend a little time in my office each day, getting caught up on filing, etc. and managed to do a bit of that between outings.
As for drawing, I bailed on real life and followed a YouTube video that promised a bunch of quick doodles.
They were quick and they are doodles, so I suppose the video was as advertised.
Tomorrow looks like it’s going to be similar in all ways to today - slightly warmer, so less likely to see snow.
Until tomorrow -
Nikki
