Climb aboard and charcoal decay
Dear Sarah - Day 281 of our daily drawing exchange

Hi Sarah -
when the day is captured in photos like this… well, drawings pale.
Not that that should stop me from trying.
We gathered relatively early this morning, drove to the other side of the island, and found a boat willing to take us around the corner to a rather appropriately named cove known as Little Eden. Back in the day it seems to have been known as a picnic/swim spot, but being flanked by cliffs, it was inevitable the climbers (and sailors) would find it attractive.
What a fabulous day. We climbed. We swam. We feasted (the boat ride is free, but the owner of the boat also happens to own a restaurant where, it was strongly suggested, we come to eat after our day at the crag). The meal was fantastic, though maybe not so attractive from this angle:
Fresh (“best on the island,” according to the skipper/cook) red snapper, local island salad, local soft goat cheese with cream, grilled octopus, fresh bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, assorted vegetables and samples of pastries and coffee cake for dessert.
Rather tired now, but heading for bed to recover in time for tomorrow’s adventures.
I could live here…
Nikki
Hi Nikki,
Having pulled up a few red snappers in my day, I appreciate both their unattractiveness and their deliciousness. The first time I saw the swim bladder inflate, I nearly fell out of the boat! But they are tasty.
It does seem as if you have landed in a climber’s, writer’s and artist’s version of Eden. I can see why you would want to stay, although living there might have its challenges—like how to earn a living.
I took a photo of a strange old house on Portage Inlet—too far away to tell if it was derelict, but I think it is. The location is gorgeous, but the house is definitely falling apart. I wonder what the story is. I haven’t used charcoal for a while, but I thought it would convey the ramshackleness of it all.
The DG lesson today was to draw 15 different things in 45 minutes. That will have to wait for another day, when I’m feeling energetic!
At least I have turkey soup already made for dinner.
XO S
