Hi Sarah-
March 2, 2025
Have I ever mentioned how much I hate drawing hands? Full of contours and wrinkles, bumps, lines, ins and outs - shadows and curves... they are difficult!
So, I decided to challenge myself and try to draw one... There are many things wrong with this, but it does look like a hand (more or less) and I think it was 'easier' than a similar hand I tried to draw a year ago, so maybe some progress is being made. Given that my hands are attached to me at all times, I wonder why they seem so alien and strange when I try to commit one to paper? And, why not draw them more often?
The day today was shockingly warm here in the mountains. I had a lovely walk during which I thought about all the many things I could draw/read/write and did none of the above. Just revelled in the early spring sunshine down by the river, enjoying all the other walkers who were out and about today.
Dear Nikki,

Full of admiration for your drawing of your hand. As you will see from my drawing, I can't even draw bird feet very well! I was writing this afternoon--Rose telling her story to Cass--and was tired by the time I got your email. So I followed along with an artist on IG and kind of got the hang of drawing a bird, starting with 2 circles and a cone. The test will be whether I can replicate it without following the video. The little cartoon is me giving you the peace sign. It's something I taught Kianna how to do, starting with the word "boy." Fun!
Tomorrow will be a busy day, starting with art class all morning, followed by trying to find a wide pot that is deep enough for sweet peas (I bought 4 different kinds!) but also light enough for me to carry up to my apartment and move around on my deck. So it can't be ceramic or terra cotta. And it can't be ugly black plastic. I am determined to have a crop of sweet peas this year. Along with zinnias, cosmos (as shown in my drawing) and lots of perennials. Colour, colour, colour!
It's time to forage for food. Until tomorrow, when I should have drawings from my class to share.
