3X3 and a bugle
Dear Nikki/Dear Sarah--Y2/D17 of our daily drawing exchange
Hi Nikki,
Another sunny day here, another walk with a friend. A bit of work, a bit of time spent on art, a bit of cooking (chicken meatballs). And now I’m having a conversation via text with you while I write this post. Very meta!
Today I used three different implements and three different intensities (is that the right word?) of black paint/ink to paint a collection of dead or dying plants—a one-inch wide brush for the really watery grey, a round brush for the more intense grey/black, and a bamboo stick for ink right out of the jar. Fun to mix it up.
I also made a birthday card for a friend (definitely not all black and grey) but I can’t post it yet because she reads our Substack! Hi, Jen!
Looking forward to your next Stronghold post.
XO S
Hi Sarah!
thanks for keeping me texty company on the drive back from the city.
Here’s the bugle from the Stronghold.
That’s all I’ve got!
Nikki

Thanks, NF. The bamboo stick is a treat to use. AS you say, it produces marks that are surprisingly lively. Thanks for following us. As Nikki said, we have surprised ourselves, and not just by sticking with it, but by the pleasure we both get from both the writing and the art-making.
Love the layered approach with diferent intensities. The bamboo stick straight from the jar is such a good move for those sharp lines, gives the whole piece this immediacy that brushes can'treally match. The bugle drawing has a nice weight to it, and the way both of you are keeping this daily exchange going despite real life stuff (texting while driving back from the city, etc) is kinda inspiring actually.
